WHAT THE HECK! IS THAT A GOD OR DEMON! WOW…(third one)
Hey self I think it looks like a mayan/aztec/chinese god or a very-dressed-monster-humanoid-thing.
i think of this one as “the priestess”- gonna be crazy powerful 🙂
I’ve been waiting for this so much time. Can´t believe that only three days separates me from this dream
Haha, how awesome is the blob with the floating eye? Great work man. I can’t get over how fluid your animations are!
cheers 🙂 currently the system in-game for dropping the slimes is very basic- you just have 1 slime type etc, but we have designs to allow a whole load of different types- a lot of them are all animated and working, just waiting on a bit more design/implementation work 🙂
**KNEELS BEFORE BARNEY-GOD**
so. beautimus. ;u;
haha 😀 😀 :D!
I am really amazed at how many different monsters you managed to put into the game right at release, with only a 2 man team, I mean it quiet literally takes more people to play your game than you needed to creat it, wtf!? xD
What I wondered too. 🙂
Do you guys have some sort of index for the creatures with descriptions … maybe later ingame too? Heh, would be cool to know what kind of creature you’re slaughtered by.
Or do they just appear due the creative process and its like »alrighty then, let’s do that one«.
I can’t answer for them, but what I can do is tell you that something like this is kind of tricky with a lot of monsters ^^ why? because the makers of D&D hold the rights for names like the mindflayer or the beholder(I might be mistaken, but I am quiet sure it was like this) therefore you can’t use those names as they are and have to call the monsters something else(you CAN use those for comedy purpose I believe though, since that is protected speech)
I kind of like how they’ve left the monsters unnamed for now so that we can give them names while we are playing the game. Knowing the name of everything sometimes takes the fun out of life.
Look, it’s Bloby, Snakey, and Wowthemostbestdressedmonsteri’veeverseen.
Bloby, Snakey, and 2fab4you*
Lol at 2fab4you! 🙂
Ah, I see.
I don’t have a clue about D&D, but I was thinking of “put a fitting random name on it and make up a rough description”. Just so you have something to read, that makes it even more interesting and tells us what the creator was thinking about it.
Like every 5th time you’re slaughtered, a new entry in the »Crawl-o-nomicon« unfolds with a little texty text about the thing that brought dead you. 😀
Otherwise you’re right, it’s nice to speculate about things … hm. 🙂
On the Steam fora I suggested that we give the monsters personal names and dossiers instead of the usual fantasy 101 labels and descriptions, so the lava imp would e.g. go by the name of Harold and his dossier would read “Harold had been dreaming of making the hottest habanero salsa of all time. Sadly no one ever lived to give him a fair appraisal.” or something. The devs seemed to like the idea 😀 .
monsters are great yeah…but guys…i’m pretty sure that barney said at one point that not all of the shown monsters will be in the first early access version…so don’t be dissapointed.
yeah they have the rights to some monster names- lucky for us we always thought it would be more fun to let the players come up with their own nicknames- if i call a guy something specific it kind of limits players form imagining what it could be so i like to leave it unsaid wherever possible 🙂
i just draw stuff and see what happens 🙂 sometimes i have a picture in my head, sometimes i start with a reference photo of a weird animal to get the ideas started- sometimes i do just what i planned, but working so low res often realize i can’t really define the thing i had planned, so i just let it evolve into something else as i draw- just whatever works 🙂
I like how lowres defines and gives you a push and then lets you decide what you want to see, which goes well with the no-creature-name-thing. The genre gives room for a wide range of interpretations.
I can totally imagine how limited you are with what is it, 64 x 64 Px per creature or less? But at the same time it’s a delightful challenge to reduce everything to the tiniest bit. I think the appreciation of the community and the release of your game (GOD, HOW LONG ARE THOSE 31 HOURS?!) is the proof you’ve done everything right. 🙂
haha thanks 🙂
not all these guys are fully set up ingame yet- i think i’m posting about 50 monsters, but we only have like 28 implemented in-game (with powered up variants taking that to 32 or so)
but i’ve got the rest all 50% done and waiting til i get time to work on their attacks, so they should be coming in every update, along with whatever new guys i feel like drawing!
Also … somehow the last gif reminds me of flippy floppy manta rays. 😀
backflips for days!
wut? how? because of the cape?
No, because of the smell …
Haha, sure it’s the cape, dude – what else?! ;D
well…it’s still pretty far away for me…but… whatever works mate 😀
haha oh man those things jump!! crazy 🙂
ATTENTION ALL COMMENTERS!
DO YOU THINK DAVID AND BARNEY SHOULD DO A VID OF THEM PLAYING CRAWL TOGETHER FOR THE LAST DAY OF THE RELEASE?!?!?!?!?!?!
TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY! (I did this just for fun but really what do you guys(commenters) think?)
they totally should… i really enjoy the “stumpt” videos but seeing and hearing the developers play the game would be extremely awesome…
YES THE SHOULD!!!!
My name is InsaneSeishiro, I’m here on behalf of the glorious nation of austria, which is often confused with australia, and I approve of this demand!
10/10 would watch.
hahaaa, yeah, that’d be pretty cool ouo)b
hehe it seems pretty unlikely as we have no experience with streaming software and upload speeds in australia are much slower than the US, but soon as i get a chance i will see if i can do a test stream and see how it goes 🙂
it would definitely be fun!
for the love of all that is holy YES PLEASE!!
it’s sooooooo clooooooooose!!!!!!!
gah!! the excitement is killing me!!
…or maybe it’s the lack of sleep 🙂
haha bestdresedmonster 🙂 yeah i always thought elaborate religious headdresses and gowns were super creepy- just overt religious stuff in general is pretty full-on, so that’s what i was going for with this weirdo 🙂
