Here we go again!
We’re off to GDC at the end of the week, so we’ve put out a small update to keep everybody going while we’re away!
We’ve got a new environment in there – The Mines – along with a bit more variety and lots of little tweaks to the existing dungeon environment. Dave has tracked down a lot of bugs and I’ve added a new Tier 4 monster to the skeleton evolution chain – The Bone Warden.
The mines are so cool 😀
But I had a question, is the skeletal lord in the game ?
that ultra-big giant skeleton still isn’t in there- i still haven’t been struck with the right inspiration for just the right animations for him…
rest assured he’s one of my absolute favorites so he’ll definitely go in, just want to make sure he plays just right for how he looks 🙂

I hope so! it feels good to get another update out nice and quick- hopefully we can keep it up and don’t get snagged on huge features like we did with the hydra- most of the features on our schedule look much quicker than that from here on in 🙂

Thanks for adding another evolution. That’s something we talk about the most: more evolutions (and tiers -wink wink-) for monsters and options for longer game duration.

haha yeah i love adding monsters, and there’s sooo many i want to add- hopefully once we have all the core features in i can just get churning out monsters 🙂

Another update *already*? Man, you guys either work amazingly fast, or the plethora of other indie games I follow are so slow they have me conditioned to expect months and months or more of wait even after new concepts are announced before even hearing about their progress again.
Yours is the first game I’ve spent money on in a good 10 years, after admittedly giving it an illegitimate test-drive. I even bought my sister a copy, and it was worth way more than every penny, already. Keep up the awesome work. Lovin it.

Haha nice. I was just recently thinking, with all the variety in evolutions for the skeleton on tier 2-3, a second tier 4 choice would be cool. And look what we have here. An awesome new environment and a new evolution for the skeletons 😀
Now I’m just hoping for the wolf creature with the burning tail for the forest environment update ^^
Those mines remind me of the Zelmite Mines from Dark Cloud 2. So cool! Will play versus bots (no friends, maybe gift a few copies when multiplayer online comes out).
Hey, I just wanted to say that my friends and I LOVE your game. We host little parties every update in order to mess around with the new stuff. Anyway, I would like to recommend something. I am pretty good at this game (I’ve put in quite a few hours with Bots) but my friends aren’t as crawl-enabled. This means that when I seize control of the character, I usually keep it till the end of the game, leaving my buddies with almost zero hero time. I would like to suggest a sort of exhaustion stat. Basically speaking It would perhaps slow, reduce damage, or reduce health after a certain amount of time or stages past. Not only would that be a great balancing mechanism for the less Crawl inclined players, but it would make gameplay a lot faster allowing the human to switch hands far more often.

I think this is a great idea! When I play with my brothers a lot of the time someone (usually me haha) gets too far ahead and then just kind of snowballs through the rest of the game.
That said, thank you so much Powerhoof for making such an amazingly creative and fun game!!!
I’d say an even better solution to that issue would be, instead of weakening the hero who lasts too long, make ghosts become gradually more powerful the longer they stay ghosts, eventually supercharging their monsters and traps if they just can’t catch a break and land that last hit on anyone, to give them an increasingly better shot at it.
The rate of empowering would have to be tweaked just right so it isn’t too much of an advantage, though.
thats actually a really good idea. I have a friend who plays that can never land the last hit on the guy, and he gets really frustrated that everyone else is high level and have a chance to win. if you stay a ghost for a few floors, maybe your monster could be slightly buffed, or u get better blobs maybe.

I love the update! Has anyone had any issues with the exit floor not spawning? I was playing over the weekend and I can’t remember the floor name but there was no exit.

I just wanted to ask something quickly and that is if you are going to do steam trading cards with icons and backgrounds because I would make that my main focus 🙂

We encountered a floor with no portal once. Also sometimes the exit is RIGHT next to a door, so you enter it accidentally and leave the floor too soon.
thanks for reporting- yeah the staircases are annoying when they spawn like that- hopefully it’s something we can tweak at some point 🙂
Also do you live near Parkville because I am very close by 🙂 because it is great to see game developers near me.
Will the next update be including any new monsters? The new boss is pretty awesome, hope to see more in the future.
not quite sure what will be in the next update, but i’d like to get in a few super-large monsters and have them as in statues outside of evolution trees 🙂
there seems to be a glitch with sticky controls. ive tried multiple controllers but it dosnt seem to matter. ill keep testing

i LOVE this update the tile and music just change that much to the game.
also the bone warden is really fun. also placing obstacles such as walls or “rooms” in the game really change and create a ton of tactics. very fun and lasting gameplay good job guys!

hmm something like sticky controls is handy to let us know about- do you have more info on exactly what is happening to make it feel sticky? are you using the bow?
The obstacles are good cause it can have a choke point and can let you atack around corners and there is so much yo can do with monsters that have bounce attacks. It’s okay for the bow but you have to know what your doing other wise it’s just cover for the monsters
Limited colours in shadows are pretty awesome, that simplicity stuff I’m into
